The Piasentina Stone found in town is a sample of what can be admired by visiting to Cividale del Friuli.

The history of Cividale del Friuli is deeply tied to the Piasentina stone, which over the centuries has been used for sculptures, civil and religious buildings.

Church of St. Francis

The construction of the church began in 1285. The façade is built up by punctuated blocks of light gray stone which join the great rose window with its concentric frames and the central portal. The same simplicity that characterizes the façade is also found in the apse area overlooking the Natisone river animated by four tall mullioned windows.

history

"How many people say that materialis intended to be worked. Working manpower, craft and art. As the granite requires much work to remove it from the mountains, a lot of work to carry it to the place of destination, work to give the right shape, work to give it a nice appearance by sanding and polishing. Faced with a wall of polished granite in our hearts tremble a thrill of reverence? Faced with the material. Not in front the work of man”
